1. RTG Pro Aluminum 6″ Travel Water Scoop (#RTGBBtv6) for Metal Detecting

Our top pick on the list is also the longest, coming in at 48 inches (or 4 feet long) including both handle and basket. This scoop edges out the competition because if its durability. While aluminum is admittedly a softer metal than stainless steel (and therefore, more prone to cracking and breakage over time) this scoop has been reinforced where the handle attaches – using a thick plate to evenly distribute the weight over a larger surface. It’s also reinforced with a square tube gusset at the back of the basket connecting to the handle. Both of these measures, combined with the expert welding and craftsmanship, make for an extremely durable sand scoop for your beach metal detecting.

Both pieces of the handle are made of thick-walled 6061 T6 tubing and boast a tight, rattle-free joint. The set screw for holding the handle in place is a large sheet metal screw. Some buyers have reported that the screws start backing out after digging for several targets in a row. If this happens, you may wish to add some blue Locktite – or maybe even drill through the handle and use a stainless quick-release hitch pin instead. This would allow you to take it apart and reassemble without having to carry a Phillips-head screwdriver around.

Another nice feature on this scoop is the angle of the weld – the handle is fastened at 20 degrees. This allows you to use your foot to drive the basket farther into the sand. This can be especially useful in wet sand, or underwater digging.

The sifting holes drilled through the basket are 5/8″ – which is large enough to sift sand, but small enough to capture a dime.

Because this scoop is made of aluminum, and because you will be using it in an environment with extremely high levels of moisture – it will be very prone to pitting and corrosion. When aluminum starts to oxidize, its surface will start turning white, and can sometimes form small pits. This may truncate the life of your long-handled beach scoop.

Lastly, all of the scoops on our list recently (within the last couple of years) starting adding a rubber grip handle at the top, for comfort but also to prevent any metal dust from staining your hands. But keep in mind, if you’re choking up on the handle your hands may become stained gray by the aluminum finish. A quick fix would be to wrap the handle in tape, or spray paint it.

2. RTG 5’ Monster Stainless Steel Metal Detector Sand Scoop for Metal Detecting 711

Coming in a very close second – and this one’s a monster! It lost points for the following reasons…

  • Slightly shorter: This scoop comes in at 47″ – one inch shy of our top pick.
  • Smaller bucket: This bucket is only 9″ long with a 5″ diameter. Our top pick has a markedly larger bucket, with the same size sifting holes.
  • Heavier: This scoop is made of stainless steel instead of aluminum. While the product description claims this scoop weighs only 4.7 pounds – we suspect it may be heavier than that. (Stainless steel is almost three times the weight of aluminum.)
  • Expensive: Of the three scoops we are featuring, this one is the priciest.

Now how about the good stuff?

We mentioned that this scoop is made of stainless steel. While that does make it heavier, it also makes it more resistant to corrosion. What are the ingredients to making stainless steel? Nickel, manganese, copper, iron, and chromium. That last element is especially important, because it acts as an agent to prevent corrosion. Stainless steel is also much less porous than aluminum, so it retains less moisture. All of this means that your scoop will last longer.

And while it may be heavier, this is the only scoop on our list that comes with a second handle protruding halfway down the shaft for added leverage. This second handle can also be treated as a foot kicker, which can help you dig deeper into that thick, wet sand.

Another nice feature about this scoop is that it’s offered with a 90-day limited warranty. The warranty is meant to cover manufacture defects.

3. RTG Supreme Beach Scoop #550

Coming in third is the Supreme Beach Scoop – we love this scoop because of its convenience and accessibility. Depending on how tall you are, you can adjust the locking pin along the shaft to accommodate for maximum comfort. The longest setting is 40″, while the shortest setting is really just a handheld at 14″. Between those two extremes are another three length settings.

The beauty of this scoop is that it comes apart into three compact pieces, which makes it ideal for travel. You can easily fit it into your suitcase or backpack. It’s also the most lightweight by far – weighing only 1.5 pounds. It’s also the least expensive option gracing our list. The ideal price for beginners.

However, what you get in ease of use, you sacrifice elsewhere. This scoop is only built for dry sand. We do NOT recommend you attempt to sift through wet sand or underwater digging. Unlike our other two picks on this list, there is not a reinforcing gusset connecting the bucket to the handle.

Buyers have reported that the handle on this scoop can feel flimsy. When hooking the pieces together, the fit is sometimes not so snug. When moving the scoop there is some slight wiggle room.

A word of warning about this sand scoop: You must always rinse, towel dry and store in a dry place away from moisture. Otherwise, it will rust very quickly – in a matter of a couple weeks. Especially at the beach.
